Last month's poll: Controversial issues
Last month we asked about starting research on contemporary and controversial issues. More than half of respondents recommend Credo for this purpose; also mentioned were Opposing Viewpoints, CQ Researcher, and open web sites such as Snopes.com. The most important factors in recommending a site were broad coverage of different issues (35%) and a balanced presentation of the issue (32%). If you're looking for coverage of controversial issues and haven't browsed Credo's Real-time Reference offering, check out the frequently-updated and rigorously vetted content from ProCon.org, Bloomberg QuickTake, and The Conversation. Our upcoming platform refresh will feature this material more prominently; see below for more information.
The Credo platform is getting a refresh this summer! We’re streamlining the search box options, featuring our Real-time Reference content more prominently, and making a few more minor changes to the look and feel of the site. Click here for screenshots of the update. Our targeted release date for this change is Thursday, July 12th, and we’ll send a separate email inviting you to take a fresh look at your account once it’s live. Just respond to this email if you have any questions or concerns.
Recognizing Librarians in the FYE
With tomorrow's official release of The Credo FYE Guide: Practices for Enhancing Instruction, we’re launching The Credo FYE Activity Contest to see how librarians integrate its programming into this Fall semester. Show us how you planned and executed your activity and you might win the grand prize of $1,000 to go toward travel/registration to the 2019 ACRL Conference. We are also now accepting nominations for the2018 FYE Innovation Awards, sponsored in partnership with the Kelvin Smith Library of Case Western Reserve University. One enterprising librarian and one library will each receive $1,500. Nominate yourself or a colleague today!
Predicting IL Misconceptions for Students in the FYE
Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe’s new paper, “Predictable Information Literacy Misconceptions of First Year Students”, is available for (free) download in the latest issue of Communications in Information Literacy. We’re honored to have played a part in her important research. In it she lists 9 common misconceptions that create barriers to academic success, and prescribes potential learning outcomes so that librarians can correct these when students arrive on campus. She discussed her research in this webinar with us last fall.
Instruction Tip of the Month: Take Advantage of Our Improved Video Embedding
Did you know your Core collection has video content, which can be easily embedded into any LMS or LibGuide? Most videos are under 3 minutes, offering a simple, visual explanation of a topic. It's a great way to add engaging background information to your course page. All videos are closed-captioned and can now be expanded to full screen. To take advantage of this improved feature, download the new version of the embed code, which is available on the platform now. Just look for the </> embed icon on any Credo entry or Topic Page. Core collection subscribers can browse their video content here.
Real-time Reference Spotlight: Immigration Conflagrations Real-time Reference is the featured search category that helps your users gather unbiased background information on the topics unfolding in the headlines.
We’ve been following the Trump administration’s policy of separating asylum seekers from their children. The president’s executive order temporarily halted this action, however the issue is far from over—especially when considering new research showing that hate crimes against Hispanic/Latino individuals rose 176% immediately following the 2016 election and continued to increase in 2017. Meanwhile, electoral turmoil in Italy came to a boil regarding EU policies of admitting refugees from war-torn countries like Syria and Afghanistan.
The headline and subheader tells us what you're offering, and the form header closes the deal. Over here you can explain why your offer is so great it's worth filling out a form for.
