United Nations Day – A Celebration of 67 Years of Operation
Today, the United Nations celebrates its 67 years of operation. The UN was established on October 24, 1945 by 51 states as a successor to the League of Nations, to promote peace and international co-operation.
The UN Charter, which was created at a conference in San Francisco, California in 1945, sets out four purposes for the UN:
- To maintain international peace and security
- To develop friendly relations among nations
- To cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights
- To be a centre for the harmonizing the actions of nations.
Let’s celebrate, today, the UN’s role in development assistance, disaster relief, cultural cooperation, aiding refugees, and peacekeeping!
